Color of Love Blog Hop (and Contest!)

Today I’m participating in The Color of Love Blog Hop, and I’m answering this question:

“Why do/did you write a multicultural romance?”

Well you see, all of my stories feature a diverse cast of characters.

I’m a big proponent of what I call Equal Opportunity Loving. In my ideal world, the heart does not discriminate based on skin color, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, body type, or (make-believe) species, or – at times – gender. I believe in compatibility of the soul.

I highlight this theme by using a diverse cast of characters in my stories, to show all kinds of people falling in love and getting in and out of trouble, together. I don’t want to write about the same kinds of characters over and over, but to spin tales that are inclusive and relatable for everyone.

Multiculturalism is something I still don’t see enough of in the genres I love; science fiction / futuristic, paranormal and  fantasy. My work is an attempt to help remedy that.

My novella, The Summoning, is a paranormal tale about a bi-racial woman who is a psychic that can communicate with the spirit world. She encounters a being from the Other Side who needs her just as much as she needs him. The story itself was an idea that had been rattling in my mind for years, but I chose to make it multicultural because I couldn’t come up with very many examples of stories like that with any ethnic lead characters.

I have a book coming out on December 18 that also features an ethnic hero and heroine that are shapeshifters, Werecats to be exact! Cat Out of the Bag is the first book in a series, and I’ve very excited about it. I’d been fantasizing about ethnic shifters forever. 😉

Welcome to the NEXT BIG THING Blog Hop!

What is a blog hop? Basically, it’s a way for readers to discover authors new to them. I hope you’ll find new-to-you authors whose works you enjoy. On this stop on the blog hop, you’ll find a bit of information on me and one of my books and links to other authors you can explore! My gratitude to fellow author, S. K. Yule, for inviting me to participate in this event. You can click the following links to learn more about S. K. and her books.

In this blog hop, my fellow authors and I, in our respective blogs, have answered ten questions about our current book or work-in-progress (giving you a sneak peek). We’ve also included some behind-the-scenes information about how and why we write what we write–the characters, inspirations, plotting and other choices we make. I hope you enjoy it!

Please feel free to comment and share your thoughts and questions. Here is my Next Big Thing!

1:  What is the working title of your book? CAT OUT THE BAG, By The Tail Book 1

2:  Where did the idea come from for the book? I’ve been wanting to create my own world with shape-shifters for a long time. Cats are my favorite animals … and I practically am a cat, so this story basically wrote itself.

3:  What genre does your book come under? Paranormal Erotic Romance

4:  Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Rosario Dawson Jesse Williams
Rosario Dawson as “Sofia Saldana” Jesse Williams as “Nathan Dawson”

5:  What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

A corporate woman seeking a therapeutic holistic getaway in the mountains gets more than she bargained for when she discovers secrets in the wild that she didn’t even know she was looking for.

6:  Is your book self-published, published by an independent publisher, or represented by an agency?

The publication status of this book is still being determined – stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks!

7:  How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It took me about 4 weeks to write 90% of the first draft of this story … then I struggled with the ending 10% for just as long! *laughs* I ended up taking some time off from the book, coming back to throw away the original ending, and then worked out the final ending in 3 days.

8:  What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? There are tons of shifter stories out there that probably share some elements, but I’ve created my own world with my own rules and explanations for this series

9:  Who or what inspired you to write this book? I took a flight to Vegas last fall that was my first flight in many years. I’d forgotten just how cramped the seats on the plane were! It seemed like I was forced to be squeezed so uncomfortably close to the person next to me, that I started to imagine it was Jesse Williams that I was sitting beside (hey, a girl can wish, can’t she?).  Heh, where my imagination went from there was so detailed, I had to turn it into a book as soon as I got the chance!

10: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

CAT OUT THE BAG is ~35,000 words, and is the first in a new shape-shifter series called By The Tail , with standalone but connected stories in the same paranormal world. All of them will contain werecats (and more weres!), a multi-culural cast of characters as well as plenty of heat within the pages. If you like imaginative worlds with hot, diverse characters, I hope you’ll stay turned for Cat Out the Bag!

Below you will find the author who will be joining me virtually, via blog, next Wednesday. Please be sure to bookmark their sites, and add them to your calendars for updates on their upcoming books!

Happy Writing and Reading!
