Tati’s Weekly Checkup: 03.07.11

The Good:

  • Last week my second published work THE SUMMONING was released, check it out if you haven’t yet.  Here’s a big ** THANK YOU** to those of you who already grabbed it! I’d love to hear what you think of it.
  • I signed a new publishing contract for my sci-fi novella WAY OUT OF CONTROL.

The Bad:

  • It snowed over the weekend. The kind that sticks. *sniffs* I’m tired of winter and am looking for spring to get here already.
  • The time machine hasn’t been invented yet. At this point, it doesn’t even need to travel back in time – I’ll settle for one that just pauses it.

The Funny (well, kind of …):

Went in for my annual checkup, and the first thing the nurse does is weight me. She jots down the number on her clipboard, shaking her head slightly as we go into the exam room. As I roll up my sleeve she grabs the extra-large blood pressure band without really looking at me. When she tries to wrap it around my arm she quickly notices that it is way, way too big for my puny bicep and looks puzzled as she switches to the normal band. I laugh at her and say, “Confusing, I know. The majority of that weight is all right here,” while slapping my ass.

She laughs and nods her head because, well, my ass is rather obvious. *sighs* But I’m working on it. 😉

The Cool:

Received an especially nice fan letter last week. That I even have a fan in the first place is amazing enough in itself, but this particular exchange was especially cool. She wrote not only to tell me that she enjoys my work, but to ask if I would mind if she drew a picture depicting one of my scenes. She drew the goblin from SAY MY NAME in livestream channel, which I joined for a bit.

What a feeling to know that my work inspired someone in that way!

The Work In Progress:

I abandoned (at least for now) the project I was working on: ABDUCTED. I was seriously blocked on that story and just wasn’t making a lot of progress.

Instead, I pulled out the draft of a sci-fi / space romance I started a year called PURSUED, dusted it off and began revising it. I’m about a quarter of the way done with it and hope to finish it by the end of the week.

My Novella WAY OUT OF CONTROL Contracted

**dances**

I just received a third publishing contract! This one is for WAY OUT OF CONTROL, a titillating, “light-sci-fi” romance.

Here’s a teaser blurb:

A doctor must help seek a cure for a man transformed into an uncontrollable monstrosity due to scientific meddling with his DNA.

But in order to help him, she must get close enough to him to risk her very life … and more.

Liquid Silver Books is the publisher, and I look forward to having another release with them. Stay tuned for more info!

Tati’s Weekly Checkup – 11.08.10

Here’s how last week went for me.

The Good:

  • I’m alive!
  • November is NaNoWriMo, and I’m participating. This time around, I’ve got a slew of buddies also participating, so I will be far from alone. Hopefully the company will be just what I need to help me win NaNoWriMo this year.
  • My upcoming novella, THE SUMMONING, now has a page. Check it out to read the blurb and an excerpt.

The Bad:

  • I’m starting NaNoWriMo a week late, because last week I was finishing up the previous book I was working on.
  • I’m out of town half this week on a business trip. (BUT this means my evenings should be relatively quiet, and I’ll lots of writing time.)

The Work In Progress:

I finished editing WAY OUT OF CONTROL, polished it up and am getting ready to send it out to be considered for publication.

Although it took me a bit, I was finally able to put my vision for the cover my upcoming book, THE SUMMONING, into words so that the artists can begin working on it. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I made a rough outline of the book I’m writing this month for NaNoWriMo. It’s an erotic sci-fi romance tentatively called ABDUCTED, and I expect it to end up around 50,000 words. I figure this because I envision it having about 20 chapters, and based on the average length my chapters tend to turn out (around 2,500 words), this comes right around the target for NaNoWriMo. Today is day 8 of NaNoWriMo, and I will only officially begin writing on this new book tonight after work – a full week late. I’m okay with that though since my reason for starting so late is because I was finishing up WAY OUT OF CONTROL.

How was your week?

Tati’s Weekly Checkup – 10.18.10

Last week was – interesting. Lots of “ups and downs” *snickers*. Here’s the run down:

The Good:

  • A steep fine that I’ve been struggling with my Homeowners Association with for months now finally got dropped. I am so, so relieved that it’s over and done with – it’s been a source of major unnecessary stress for almost 90 days. It was all over landscaping, at that. Of all things.
  • My husband was such a sweetheart this week. He served me breakfast in bed, fetched items up and down the stairs for me, prepared my bath water, etc.

The Bad:

  • The reason my husband was doing all those super sweet things for me is because I was injured. *sniffs* I sprained my left ankle and (simultaneously) banged up my right knee last week. Bad. In fact, it’s been four days, and my ankle is only just now beginning to show signs of real improvement.

The Funny

  • Four days later … the way I fell down and hit the floor after running down the stairs and sprained my ankle and busted my knee …was rather amusing.
  • My husband thought the sight of our preschooler imitating me getting injured (on the floor, holding his ankle, his face twisted in pretend little-boy agony: “Oooh, ow, my ankle hurt, my ankle hurt *whispers* I’m mommy.”) was pretty funny. Personally, I’m still not too sure on that one.

The Cool:

Going through my files, I found an old, spooky short story that I wrote several years back. Since I don’t really plan to expand on it or do anything with it, I thought I’d share it soon as a free read for a Halloween treat! So keep watch for a post from me soon about when this story is available!

The Work In Progress:

I’m about 50% of the way through revising and editing WAY OUT OF CONTROL, and am happy to report that I am on track for having it done by the end of this week. Which will be great, because it’ll give me a full week to plan the book I’m going to start working on in November as part of NaNoWriMo.

That’s how my week went. A new week’s here with plenty of work for me to do already, so I better hop to it (literally). 🙂

Tati’s Weekly Checkup – 10.11.10

The Good:

  • Last week was very busy work-wise, but I had a good trip there and back and the meetings went very well and were quite productive. I even did a presentation in an auditorium in front of about 40 or so folks, and I managed to not freak out, be informative and make people laugh at the same time. Yay!
  • The weather last week was beauti-onderful. I wish it could be like last week all year long.

The Bad:

Somehow, all comments on my blog that were added last week on Thursday/Friday have disappeared! If you left a comment recently and it is missing, please note that I did not delete it – somehow they all got wiped. 🙁

The Funny:

We took a family outing this weekend to see the UniverSOUL Circus performance here in Chicago. It was quite entertaining – I think my husband and I even enjoyed it more than the kids did. But anyways, there was one act in particular that really impressed my 6-year-old. At one point, he saw some performers doing this routine:

… and he asked me if I could do that, too? (I told him I probably could, with enough practice … what do you think? Am I multi-talented? 😉 )

The Cool:

I signed up as a participant  for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) this year! I expect to start a new novel, title TBD, in November along with thousands of other writers. The goal is to get 50,000 words of a new novel written. I have an idea of what I’m going to write, but it is still pretty vague at the moment. I’ll share more information as I learn of it. In the meantime, my NaNoWriMo profile page can be found at http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/609413.

The Work In Progress:

I’m about a quarter of the way through revising/editing WAY OUT OF CONTROL. I hope to get through at least 50% of it by the end of this week, preferably 75%.  My progress has been a little on the slow side, but steady.

How was your week?

Tati’s Weekly Checkup – 10.04.10

Well I’m back, after being MIA for a week. First time for many months that I’ve skipped out on posting anything on my blog for an entire week, but I was feeling a lot of stress and needed a little break away from everything so that I could release, relax and refocus.

The Bad:

  • I had a to-do list ten miles long (including personal, job, volunteering, mentoring, writing and freelance/business tasks) which completely overwhelmed me to the point of burnout
  • Because I was so stressed out, interpersonal conflicts blew up and became much bigger issues than they needed be … which further added to my stress

The Good:

  • I’m still alive. And I’m back
  • My to-do list has been cut down to nearly half. Some items got checked off. Others were simply pushed off to a future date after I spent time re-prioritizing my goals and their timelines in a way that enabled me to reach my objectives without overburdening myself

The Funny:

As part of my efforts to de-stress, I learned the moves to this dance routine and performed them repeatedly. With zeal. Apparently too much zeal for a non-dancer of my age, as I consequentially suffered from sore and stiff neck, shoulders and back for more than 48 afterwards.

It did help clear my mind and loosen my nerves quite a bit, though …

The Cool:

Another review for SAY MY NAME has been spotted, this one at The Musings of Violette D and it’s a rather nice one. 🙂

The Work In Progress:

I finished revising my paranormal erotic romance, THE SUMMONING, and got it submitted.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the editor I submitted it to wants to buy it.

My writing buddy read and provided some valuable feedback on the draft of my sci-fi romance, WAY OUT OF CONTROL, which I will be revising this week. This may prove to be a bit of a challenge, considering that I’m out of town most of this week and I always struggle with sticking to my schedule when I’m away from home. But I’m determined to give it my very best effort to be a good girl, even after long days of business suits, tedious meetings and training sessions.

I hope you had a good week. Time for me to go and start making this one a better one than the past two have been.

Tati’s Weekly Checkup – 9.13.10

I wish this was my list ...

Since so many people ask me what I’m up to these days and what book am I working on now, I figure I need to do a better job of sharing what’s going on with me and my works in progress. So welcome to the very first “Tati’s Weekly Checkup” post!

Here’s a summary of how last week went for me.

The Good:

  • Surgery’s over. My husband had surgery the week before last to remove a golf-ball-sized growth on his thyroid (and part his thyroid had to come out as well). The surgery went well! The growth turned out to be benign, he’s healed nicely hasn’t been on pain meds at all for a several days now. So glad that’s over and done with.
  • Andriod! I’ve got the new Samsung Epic 4G smartphone, powered by Android, and I must say – I’m pleased. Smartphones with keyboards and OS’s that seamlessly integrated with my Google applications – rocks.
  • Game on. I actually managed to fit in a little bit of gaming time for a change. I played the The Secret Armory of General Knoxx expansion for Borderlands with my husband for some quality couple time (hey, we’re geeks, okay?)

The Bad:

  • Medical bills. I know they’re coming. And they won’t be pretty.
  • Political arguments. I’m just not a big fan of them. Not the arguments themselves, per se, but how overly emotional people tend to get when discussing them, even to the point of attacking folks they care about. Ugh @ that.
  • Cancer. My very good friend just recently learned that her mother’s breast cancer has spread to her lymph nodes. The prognosis she got wasn’t so great, but I’m hoping she beats the odds. It’s actually rather frightening. I personally know 6 people just  in the past 24 months alone who have either been diagnosed with cancer or had to be biopsied for it. This is a disturbing trend to me. I really hope that the wide-spread, apocalypse-creating disease that horror and thriller writers like to tell stories about isn’t already here …

The Funny:

Spelling. My oldest son is in first grade, and at school he has an assignment each week where he’s to try to spell a word he hasn’t been taught. His instinctual spellings are HILARIOUS, and add further proof to my declaration that the English language is wonky :-D. Here’s some of his spellings:

  • carit (carrot)
  • fiyer (fire)
  • lalleypop (lollipop)
  • ranebo (rainbow)

The Cool:

Reviews. People are reading and talking about SAY MY NAME! There are reviews at:

Contests. I held my first contest ever, and was able to choose a winner and send her the prize – a free copy of my eBook!

The Work In Progress:

I recently finished writing the draft of a sci-fi romance novella, WAY OUT OF CONTROL, about an experiment gone very wrong.  I have a writing buddy looking it over while I take a short break from that story (so that when I come back to revise and edit it I can do so with feedback and fresh eyes).

In the meantime I’m working on polishing my paranormal erotic romance THE SUMMONING, so I can submit it for possible publication. This story features a psychic and her naughty spiritual helper. I’m about halfway through my revisions, and hope to be done and ready to submit by the end of the week.

So that’s what’s going on with me. And I’m off to kick off another action-packed week!
