13 Things I Was Hesitant To Try – But Am Glad I Did

by ** Tatiana Caldwell ** on July.29.2010

I’d like to consider myself a very open-minded person. There’s very few (legal) things that I wouldn’t try at least once.
That doesn’t mean I never have any hesitations, however.
Here’s a list of things I was hesitant to try at first, but I’m glad I did!
  1. Ice Skate. Because I’m deaf in one ear, my equilibrium is a bit off and I have terrible balance. I feared that I would do nothing but embarrass myself trying to move on ice in shoes with knives on them. But I picked it up quickly, and even learned to ice skate backwards! Doing this in gave me the courage to also try roller-blading out in public.
  2. Eat sushi. Under-coked and raw fish? Wrapped in seaweed? Eww is what I thought at first. But sushi now happens to be one my absolute favorite foods.
  3. Buy an eReader device. Wasn’t 100% positive I’d enjoy reading anything other than a physical book – but I love my Nook!
  4. Write a book with publication in mind. I’ve loved reading and writing since I was a kid, and wrote many novellas, short stories, roleplays and screenplays before I even became an adult. But no one ever really saw them but me and those closest to me, and that was all I’d wanted. But now that I have my first book coming out soon, I’m excited, and I don’t think I can stop trying to publish more.
  5. Fall in love. I don’t completely open my heart easily, simply because I didn’t trust easily, and didn’t think anybody would truly understand me, anyways. I’m so grateful that somebody (not saying any names :-P ) convinced me to try otherwise …
  6. Ride the world’s tallest rollercoaster. I’m a thrill-seeking dare-devil … who’s afraid of heights! I mean, this particular coaster shoots you over 400 feet straight into the air – and then tosses you back down at 120mph! CrAzY! Even though I almost died, I’d never felt more alive. (And I’d do it again).
  7. Jet-ski. I’ve ridden on the back of a motorcycle twice  and I was thoroughly terrified both times. So I was quite hesitant to get on a jet-ski – which is a lot like a motorcycle but on water. But I loved it!  (Maybe because I was the one actually in control, perhaps)
  8. Rock Wall Climbing. First off, it’s even harder to do than it looks. But what a workout, and a thrill.
  9. Jump off a boat into the ocean. I really didn’t think this was a good idea (especially considering that all of the speed boat’s passengers were intoxicated – shhh!), but I gave in to beer – er, peer pressure just that once. It was definitely a memorable experience, though.
  10. Go camping. Real, rugged camping, on a mountain with no plumbing. I’d never been interested in even play camping in the backyard before that. But I did have a naturally  good time! (Don’t need to ever do it again, though)
  11. Live completely alone. In a state I’d never lived in before, with no one I knew (except my new co-workers) within thousands of miles. I think it was the first time I had to completely take care of myself. For a sheltered, spoiled girl like me, this was a valuable experience, and one I intentionally repeated.
  12. Divulging my kinkiest secret fantasies. I was hesitant to share them with hubby because some of them just …  ain’t right. I have some that I STILL haven’t fully expressed, heh. But if I’d kept them to myself, none of them would have ever been fulfilled.
  13. Running. I didn’t think I was built for running. I have flat feet (fallen arches) and jiggly parts that would protest whenever I tried to move at a speed faster than a brisk walk or light jog. But then I switched running shoes and began doubling up on the sports bras for better support, and started giving running a full go a couple of weeks ago. And I must say, I’m really enjoying it and it’s benefits!

What about you? Was there anything you were hesitant to try, but glad you did give in and try it?

the only thing I can think of right now is Flying…

I wasn’t hesitant I was refusing to do it lol

It’s not my favorite thing but I’m so glad I conquered that fear…

It’s great to hear that you gave it a shot, despite your fear. Conquered it, and had a good time!

First off, ewwww on the sushi. LOL! As far as fulfilling sexual fantasies though, I’m totally with you on that. ;) Things I experience now I would never have tried in my 20′s, but as I’ve gotten older, my inhibitions have just flown out the window. ;) Happy Thursday!

Yeah, I’m finding the same about my inhibitions.

And sushi is “delish”!

LOL! We have some of those same things in common. I was hesitant to try camping, but I did it and was glad I did it, thought I don’t want to do it again! I’m definitely not the outdoor type, unless it’s going to the beach! LOL! I was also hesitant about the jumping off the boat thing, but I did it. We were in St. John’s and went snorkeling, but I didn’t realize I’d have to jump off the boat until we got out there. Yikes! LOL! I was glad I did that, though. My others, which aren’t on your list, would be skiing and doing the shark cage thing. Hated skiing, but loved doing the shark cage. That was really fun!

*hugs*

I’m not an outdoorsy girl at all. My husband makes fun of me all of the time – I have to be in a special mood to even just hang out on my porch.

I’ve ridden in a ski-lift before (fun) but didn’t actually try to ski (just doesn’t look fun). I ould *probably* give snorkeling a try. Hmm … don’t know about that shark cage, though!!

Great list! I like sushi, too. It’s a distant second, but I’m looking forward to home rolled futomaki tonight. Crab sticks and cucumber, yum. Oh, and good Kukuho Rose rice. :) As for your question, I’m really glad I tried blogging and for having accepted Mel Keegan’s request for a story to offer free to support his GLBT Bookshelf! Was an exciting thing to see my fiction as an e-book. Now, if I can just get over my nerves about submitting to publishers.

Ooh Darla, you’re making me hungry!

Blogging is a good one, I’m starting to like it a lot, too.

Congrats to you for at least getting something you wrote out there! Now, stand tall and get to submitting! *cracks whip*

1. I had no idea you were deaf in one ear! If you don’t mind me asking, was it from birth or did something happen when you were older? I LOVE ice-skating and rollerblading. I cannot do the old-fashioned skates at all; I will be on my butt as soon as i put one foot forward.
6. 7. 9. I am a rollercoaster junkie. I have not tried jet-skis yet though I would love to. My fear is accidentally running into something and then a big fireball :-/ Jumping off a boat into the ocean is AWESOME. I would love to get the courage to jump off a cliff into the ocean.
10. Oh WOW. Would love to see a blog post about that! That’s one thing that I just can’t bring myself to do!

I lost my hearing in my left ear when I was 10, due to a virus. Maybe one of these days I should post more about that?

I love ALL skating, including old-fashioned roller-skates . Okay wait – I don’t like skateboards. Requires a level of balancing I don’t have.

I don’t know if I have the courage to jump off a cliff into the ocean … but I WOULD like to parasail over the ocean!

Camping was quite an experience that I’m glad I can look back on, and the views from that mountain at sunset was magnificent. Even the food we roasted on the open fire was great. Not something I need to repeat, though.

I used to love camping and ice skating – haven’t done either in ages – but you can keep the rollercoaster and the jet ski. I’d say one of the best and funnest “new” experiences I ever had was white water canoing. Absolutely loved it!

I could see myself canoeing. *adds that to my must-try list*

Let’s see: love sushi, I’ve dove off a boat into deep water at a lake, and rough it camping. Don’t have an ereader yet, but intend to get one. Haven’t lived out of state by myself, in fact haven’t even left the state since I was twelve. And I’m terrified of heights and don’t ride roller-coasters anymore, but I’ve been in a small airplane.

Happy TT.

Really? You haven’t left the state since you were 12? We’ve got to get you out, more!

My friend Jacob, who introduced me to sushi, told me that there are three types of people who try sushi. The first are those who hate it instantly. There is no recovery and they never like it. That’s it. The second are those who love it instantly. Total instant addiction (that was me). The third are those who try it, and are kind of ambivalent about it. But then in three weeks, they find themselves craving sushi like mad – and then they’re hooked. In my experience, that’s pretty accurate. People who don’t like it really don’t like it, and haven’t from the start.

Yup. Sounds about right.

What a great list. I think it’s good to go through life trying new things, even if they frighten us a little.

Nice list! I’m no thril-seeker, so a lot of that just ain’t for me! Here’s some of mine….

1. DJing – started doing this at University, and it was a gas. And to end up DJing on a boat going down the River Severn, playing funk, Brazilian, afrobeat, house & hip-hop REALLY felt like it’d been worth starting.
2. Bone marrow. YUM! Tried it at this restaurant in London that’s always being voted in the top 20 or 30 globally, and it is deeeeelish….damn filling, tho….
3. Moving out and living alone. My golly that makes you grow up quick……
4. Allow a few folks in a club to hear the rhythmic “music” I’d been making at home. Then hearing the applause. Nice.
4. Best Man’s speech. Not sure I was hesitant, as such; it was for my best mate, so of course I was honoured to be asked. But the prospect scared the hell out of me. But it went superbly. I actually made grown men cry……
5. Embark on a nuts adventure that I’ve only just begun….even if it goes belly-up, I’d be crazy to regret it.
6. Take on an ex-employer for wrongful dismissal. A lot of stress, a fair bit of fear. But success. Oh, how sweet that was…..

Thanks, Fubs! You have a nice list, too! You ate bone marrow?? Interesting. I can only speculate about the adventure you’re embarking upon in #5. Ooh, and would love to hear more details about #6, please!
