Okay, so maybe I’m one of the few lovers of paranormal romance on the planet who has yet to either read or see Twilight. I’ll get to it eventually – I have a reading list three miles long.
But I did feel compelled to read Stephenie Meyer’s seemingly less talked about novel, The Host. I’m also a science fiction lover, and it had been a long time since I’ve actually read one, so I picked this one up hoping it would satisfy my hunger for a taste of alien possibilities.
And it did!
I loved this book. Stephenie Meyer’s knack is invoking emotions. There were parts in this book that made me angry, sad, nervous, ponderous and awed. Even though it felt far more literary than science fiction – there was only a teeny bit of action or science – the character development, tension and light but endearing romance made this book hard for me to put down.
If this is the kind of impact Meyer’s delivers consistently, I guess I’m going to have to bump Twilight up on my list!
I was surprised by the kind of questions this book made me ponder. Who am I, exactly? Am I my face, this body? My personality? Who I was and what I did in my past, or rather what I’ve learned and what I plan to be in the future? What exactly is the human soul, and where is it?
Although this book was pretty much rated PG (with the exception of a violent scene or two that I personally could have done without but understood the artistic expression), the fact that it left me thinking long past The End is what makes it hot. It turned my mind on..
