Touchdown!

Whoo hooooo! *does a victory dance*

So I am 6 days past my initial goal of finishing the first draft of The Beauty of Death. But ONLY 6 days! It is done a day before my maternity leave ends, so basically it took me about 3 months to write this book. Not bad considering that during this time I also took pause to give birth to a baby. The finished draft is almost 90,000 words, a little under 350 pages. I am very happy with it!

Going into this project, I was testing this genre to see if it is even the right fit for me, and I believe it is! I felt passionate throughout the entire development of this book, I looked forward to writing every day, and I think I could have written it even more quickly had not I second guessed myself over and over.

I have gone from taking 3 YEARS to write a book to 3 MONTHS, with 2 kids and a house to take care of. That feels great. I have learned that this is an easy enough task to do when you keep a steady pace, which is much easier to do when you are writing about something you are passionate about (which not only helps makes for a faster story, but a better one). Oh – and having a writing buddy to report your progress to each week also seems to help. I am very thankful for my good friend, Sarah!

So let’s see, what will I do with this manuscript? I am going to spend a month editing it, and I hope to make it through a 3rd revision in time to submit before the December 3rd deadline of RWA’s (Romance Writers of America) Golden Heart contest. The prize for this contest is only recognition, but at this point in my writing career I need all the recognition I can get. And who’s recognition would be better for me to have than the premiere professional organization for romance writers? I will also submit my story to a few editors or agents – I will need to do some research to decide who. In the meantime, I’m going to go and gloat for a little while about my accomplishment. Boy do I feel good!
